Nimbin FIG's Summer Film Workshops February 13th to 18th this year.
Hone your skills for Nimbin's "39 hours" short film competition coming up in March.

Presentations and workshops will run all weekend and include music score, digital video editing, script writing, directing, audio recording, camera, and acting for camera. Workshop timetables and entry forms are available for download in word.doc format by clicking the links below.

Workshops are subsidised by the Nimbin Film Industry Group. There is a participant contribution per session of $10 waged $5 unwaged, sessions are approx 1.5 hours. There are limited places in all workshops so booking is essential.

Summer Film Workshop Overview

Music Score with David Julian:
Tuesday 13th 9:30 - 3:30 Nimbin CTC

A hands on workshop introducing music score software such as Q base. How to record and edit live music and sound effects as well as digital sound production and copyright issues.  (2 sessions waged $20, unwaged $10)

Editing with Paris Naday:
Wednesday 14th 9:30 - 3:30 Nimbin CTC

This workshop will use Sony software at Nimbin CTC, and cover, logging clips (camera to computer) basic editing, cross fades etc, slow and fast motion, adding music and sound effects, and burning to dvd. (2 sessions waged $20, unwaged $10)

Directing with Tristan Bancks
Saturday 17th February 9:30 till 11:00am

Director Tristan Bancks twenty minute short film "Soar" was made for $1500 in a single day on two digital cameras and has gone on to screen at some of the world's top film festivals. These include London, Melbourne International Film Festival, Aspen and the 'Cannes' of short film festivals, Clermont-Ferrand. "Soar" has also won various industry awards and been screened widely on TV and in-flight.

In this in formation-packed two hour session Tristan shares tips on making a low-to-no budget short with high production values as well as finding a 'look' for your film and creating a shotlist that tells your story in a simple, yet powerful way.

Audio with Darmin Cameron:
Saturday 11:30 till 1pm Nimbin school of Arts

Darmin will introduce participants to cheap audio solutions on the fly as well as how to record professional quality audio . Sound is so often neglected in films, good quality audio recording can make the difference between a great film and a waste of time.
(1 session waged $10, unwaged $5)

Camera with Paul Tait :
Saturday 1:30 till 5:30pm Nimbin school of arts main Hall

Paul Tait is a local cinematographic legend, he has worked internationally on a number of films as well as for the ABC. Paul will take people through the basics of camera operation. (2 sessions waged $20, unwaged $10)

Script writing with Vale Mendelson
Saturday 11:30 till 3:30 in the Backstage Studio of the Nimbin School of Arts

Vale is a local writer who has had a number of scripts accepted for publishing, and directed and produced many local performances for stage and radio. This is an interactive workshop for both beginners and experienced writers aiming for a brief finished work suitable for performance, using the layout accepted by the Australian Film and Television Association.  (2 sessions waged $20, unwaged $10)

Acting for Camera with Rowan Greaves
Sunday 18th February 9:30am till 5pm Nimbin School of Arts

Rowan is an inspirational and dynamic teacher with years of experience in the industry both as an actor and director. Rowan is currently teaching "Acting for Stage and Screen" at the Northern Rivers Conservatory Arts Centre. Click here for Rowan's C. V. (word.doc)

This workshop will run for a full day and is divided into 3 sessions.

Morning session 9:30 till 11:00am will be a drama workshop, with particular emphasis on acting for camera.

Middle session 11:30 till 1:00pm will be individually filmed auditions. Participants will be given the opportunity to audition for a 'fictitious' part, their audition will be filmed and feedback provided.

Afternoon session will be watching the taped auditions and giving and receiving feedback.
